Submission guidelines

One image per entry. Yours to submit. Safe for a public wall that anyone can open. These guidelines form part of the terms of entry, and every submission is reviewed by a person before it appears.

The technical rules

  • One image per entry, and one number per entry. There is no cap on how many entries an account may hold: each one is paid for separately and receives its own number.
  • One collection per entry. People, Achievements, Creations, Pets or Moments — chosen when you enter, and permanent once the number is issued.
  • JPEG, PNG or WebP. The format is read from the file itself, not from its name — renaming a file does not change what it is.
  • Up to 4 MB.
  • At least 400 pixels and at most 12,000 pixels on each side.
  • A title, which is shown publicly beside your number.

HEIC, RAW and video are not accepted. Every entry is a still image; there is no video anywhere in One in Million.

What makes a good entry

There is no house style. The collection you enter is the theme: an entry competes only against others in the same collection, judged by whoever votes. Entries are shown large, so image quality matters — but what carries an entry is the thing it is of.

It must be yours to submit

You must own the image, or hold every right and permission needed to submit it — including from anyone identifiable in it. This is the single rule most likely to get an entry removed. See copyright.

AI-generated and AI-assisted images

Allowed, and you must say so. If the image was generated by AI, or materially altered or extended by AI, tick the disclosure box at submission.

Ordinary photographic processing — exposure, colour, cropping, noise reduction, sharpening, dust removal — is not AI generation and does not need disclosing.

Undisclosed AI generation is treated as a breach of these guidelines, and removal for a breach does not come with a refund.

What is not allowed

  • Content that is unlawful anywhere it would be shown.
  • Sexual content involving minors, or any sexualised depiction of a minor. Reported to the authorities, and the account is permanently removed.
  • Sexually explicit or pornographic content.
  • Graphic violence, gore, or real death or injury, and content that glorifies or promotes violence.
  • Hate content attacking people for who they are, and hate symbols used to promote hatred.
  • Harassment — targeting, doxxing, or humiliating an identifiable person.
  • Images of people who have not consented where consent is needed, and private or intimate images shared without permission.
  • Impersonation — presenting someone else’s work, likeness or identity as your own.
  • Anything you did not have the right to submit, including stock, scraped, purchased-for-other-use and client-owned images.
  • Advertising, promotion, spam, QR codes and watermarked calls to action.
  • Screenshots, memes, plain text images and pure graphics. Every entry is a photographic image.
  • Files crafted to attack the service — malformed images, decompression bombs, embedded payloads.

Never submit confidential or identifying documents

An entry is published publicly and carries a permanent number. Do not submit an image of anything below, whether it is yours or somebody else’s.

  • Identity documents — passport, Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, national identity card, voter card, or any photograph of one.
  • Government or official information that is classified, restricted or confidential, and anything issued to you as a government or security employee — passes, credentials, internal documents, facilities.
  • Confidential employer or client material — internal documents, unreleased work, anything you are under an obligation to keep private.
  • Medical records and health documents, yours or anyone else’s.
  • Financial account details — card numbers, bank statements, account or routing numbers, cheques.
  • Passwords, keys, tokens and access codes, in any form, including visible on a screen or a note in the background.

Check the background of your image. A document, a screen or a badge caught behind the subject is published just as plainly as the subject itself.

We do not scan for this and cannot promise to detect it. If you see an entry containing information of this kind, use Report this image on the entry’s page — reports are read by a person, and an entry can be removed. An entry removed for this reason keeps its number, which is never reissued.

Reviewed before it appears

Every entry starts as pending review, visible only to you. A person looks at it before it is published to the wall. Paying enters you into the competition; it does not oblige us to publish your entry.

If your entry breaches these guidelines it may be refused or later removed, and no refund is given — see refunds.

Competing fairly

Do not create additional accounts, automate voting, or pay for votes. Manipulating the competition is grounds for removal and suspension.

Reporting an entry

Every published entry carries a Report this image control. Use it if you believe an entry breaks these guidelines or infringes your rights.
